UTM parameters are the tags you append to a URL so analytics tools know which campaign, source and medium a click belongs to. Without them, traffic from your newsletter, your Instagram bio and a print QR code all blur together in Google Analytics. With them, each one is its own line in your reports.
The five UTM tags
- utm_source — the sender (newsletter, instagram, poster).
- utm_medium — the channel (email, social, print, cpc).
- utm_campaign — the campaign name (summer_sale).
- utm_content — which variant (header_link, story_link).
- utm_term — the keyword, mostly for paid search.
Param templates save time
Instead of typing the same source and medium on every link, save a template (say 'source=newsletter, medium=email') and apply it with one click. New links inherit the preset, so tagging is consistent across the team and your reports stay clean.
Keep tagging consistent
Use lowercase, no spaces, the same names every time. 'Instagram' and 'instagram' become two different sources in your reports. Templates are exactly the tool that prevents that drift. See plans.
