Dynamic vs Static QR Codes: Which Do You Need?

4 mins read

There are two kinds of QR code and the difference matters once you have printed them. A static QR code encodes the destination URL directly — once printed, it is fixed forever. A dynamic QR code encodes a short link from teilen.bio, and that short link can be redirected and tracked.

Static QR codes

  • The destination is baked into the code.
  • Cannot be changed after printing.
  • No scan tracking.
  • Work even if our service disappeared.
  • Best for permanent, unchanging links.

Dynamic QR codes

  • Point to a teilen.bio short link behind the code.
  • Destination can be changed any time without reprinting.
  • Every scan is counted, with country and device.
  • Can expire or be password-protected.
  • Best for almost any real-world campaign.

Which to pick

Choose dynamic whenever you might want to change the destination, measure scans, or run a time-limited campaign. Choose static only for a permanent, untracked pointer (a single everlasting link to your homepage, say). For menus, posters, packaging and events, dynamic is almost always the right call.

All plans create both kinds; tracking and editing need a paid plan. See plans.
